The word “educator” comes from the Latin “educare,” meaning to lead, to guide. To have the opportunity to be an educator, a guide, for young people is a privilege I try never to take for granted. Tutoraing provides an excellent opportunity to work closely with students outside the classroom. As an educator, I strive to both help students develop a broad perspective which enables them to understand the role the challenges facing our society as well as challenge students to acquire skills that will be broadly applicable both inside and outside of academia. One of my goals as an instructor is to help students develop a broader sociological perspective as they attempt to understand local, national, and global issues. My goal as a tutor is to help students acquire basic course knowledge, as well as develop strategies for personal educational success. Secondly, It is my mission as a sociological educator to encourage each student to think critically about society. Though classroom can provide students an opportunity to acquire knowledge, students also need time and guidance to , articulate new thoughts, and ideas. To achieve these goals, I work to make the relationship between teacher and student an inclusive learning environment. To do this I emphasize a whole person approach, I do this because I want students to know that I care about them and am fully invested in their learning experience. In my experience, this approach encourages students to take a greater interest in the class and the material, as well as develop greater empathy towards one another. For every tutoring, I arrive on time, prepared, and excited to discuss the day’s topic. My passion and enthusiasm go a long way in encouraging students’ desire developing a sociological perspective. I attempt to engage every student, so his or her voice is heard. I do this through questions posed during the hour, active learning exercises, and other activities designed to encourage not only the acquisition of information but to gain a lasting appreciation of the subject.
